In that sentence Montaigne explains the reason for writing his essays (3 books of 500 pages each): not to teach lessons about things, but to learn about himself. This connects with the latest entry in this blog and with the Greek maxim "Know thyself" (inscribed in the Oracle of Delphi - 6th century B.C.). Should think about it.
